When people criticize Sleeping Beauty’s Castle for being ‘fake’…
Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty’s Castle was famously inspired by Ludwig II’s Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria.
Over the years, this has caused many cynics and critics to dismiss it as ‘fake’.
Well, duh.
No one over the age of ten ever imagined otherwise. And anyway, isn’t all art technically ‘fake’? (Van Gogh’s Sunflowers? Not real flowers. They’re not even scratch-n-sniff!)
The irony here is that Neuschwanstein Castle is also a ‘fake’, built some 400 years after the rest of Europe had stopped building castles and intentionally designed to evoke both the Middle Ages and the “musical mythology” of Mad King Ludwig’s friend, Richard Wagner.
